BARC Houston , the City's Animal Shelter and Adoption Center, invites Houston-area residents to the facility and a special event to close out March 2011.  Spring time is puppy and kitten “season” and BARC, like many other animal shelters sees an increase in animals to our facility.

On Saturday March 26th, BARC will extend its operating hours to 10 am – 8 pm for a special Foster Expo & Pet Adopt-A-Thon event at the 3200 Carr Street location.  The goals for this event are to educate the public on responsible pet ownership, recruit foster homes, increase pet adoptions, train new volunteers and encourage donations.  Visitors will be able to take advantage of discounted pet adoptions, enjoy booths with local vendors, receive informational pet care tips, participate in various training classes and much more.

This coming weekend is also the last weekend to take advantage of current pricing at BARC.  Recently, Houston City Council approved a citywide fee increase across many departments, including BARC Animal Shelter & Adoptions.  BARC collects and retains fees set out by city ordinance, including adoption, rabies quarantine, rabies vaccine, registration, and licensing fees.  New fees for BARC services go into effect April 1, 2011.

The BARC adoption fee includes services such as spay/neuter, rabies vaccination, City license, microchip and much more.  The adoption package of services equates to a retail value close to $850 as compared to similar services offered through breeders or veterinarians.  BARC adoption rates remain the lowest in the City as compared to other area animal shelters, and are the best pet adoption value for the money.  Discounts are continuing to be offered to Veteran’s and Senior Citizens.

Pet license fees support the return of lost dogs and cats to their homes and help adopt homeless dogs and cats to new families. Other services funded by pet licensing are the prevention of animal neglect or cruelty, spay/neuter programs, over-population programs, and community education services. The funds from these fees helps to increase the chances that animals at BARC will find permanent homes with loving families.  A pet wearing a license has a better chance of being reunited with its owner.

The simplest, but most powerful thing you can do to help the BARC Houston shelter, and pets throughout our community, is to talk to your friends, neighbors, and family about caring for pets responsibly.  We encourage everyone to visit our website  www.houstonbarc.com , and become a fan on facebook at  www.facebook.com/BARCHouston .
