Barack Obama says a puppy is on the way

Posted Nov 06 2008 8:25am

In President Elect Barack Obama's victory speech Tuesday night he promised to continue the long line of presidential pets in the White House. Obama told his 7- and 10-year-old daughters:

I love you more than you can imagine, and you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House.

The type of dog the Obamas will get is still up in the air, though Michelle, the future first lady, has hinted at getting a rescue dog in the past.

Pets in recent presidential history, according to the Presidential Pets Museum, include:

  • Bush (W.): Miss Beasley and Barney (Scottish Terriers), Spot (dog) and India (cat)
  • Clinton: Socks (cat) and Buddy (chocolate Lab)
  • Bush (H.): Millie and Ranger (Spinger Spaniels)
  • Reagan: Lucky (Bouvier des Flandres) and Rex (King Charles Cavalier Spaniel)
  • Carter: Grits (dog) and Misty Malarky Ying Yang (Siamese cat)
  • Ford: Liberty (Golden Retriever) and Shan (Siamese cat)
