It’s important that we acknowledge the brave men and women who have served and are currently serving in our armed forces. They are protecting the United States, allowing each of us to live in a free society. They all have or are currently putting their lives on the line to protect and defend. I know that many facing a chronic or life-threatening illness don’t like to consider their health challenge a war, but we can learn certain things from our Veterans.
When facing a health challenge we have to remember that our primary concern is protecting our borders of health. We have to be prepared to defend our personal borders, so opportunities like flu shots, meditation, and other health inspiring activities are important. We have to match our determination for personal freedom with the determination of our troops who don’t retreat when things become difficult. Perseverance is something we can learn from our Veterans.
Each Veteran is on a mission and so are you when facing an illness. Your mission is to engage all your physical, emotional and spiritual resources to move your toward health and/or healing. You are the commander-in-chief of your healthcare team; that’s not a responsibility that should be taken lightly.
I know at times it may seem daunting, but being present at all times keeps you aware and that aware can propel you forward. On this Veteran’s Day I hope you think about other lessons our Veterans have shared that you can translate to your own mission of wellness.
