The Elements

Posted Oct 20 2009 10:01pm

Last week I had the opportunity to engage in transformational art projects that were augmenting my morning classroom experience.  Each day we were exploring one of the four elements; fire, earth, water, air/sky.  During each opportunity to connect our inner beings and nature we were guided in a meditation.  After the meditation, we were then encouraged to ponder certain questions about the element.  After we pondered the question we came in and engaged in creative activity to bring the responses from the meditation to the foreground of our consciousness.

I’ll talk about various aspects over the course of the week, but wanted to start today with my air/sky meditation.  The question of the day was, “What gift do I give the world based on air/sky?”  The second aspect was to create a visualization that I would translate into a visual art form.  After due consideration what presented itself to me was how I connected breathing to air/sky.  As an asthmatic, air and breathing are closely connected.  It’s something that each and every person with a lung related illness considers every day.  My gift to the world based on the air/sky/breath are the words I speak and write for the health and healing community.  My gift is the comfort, education, and support I offer the community.  The hope is that members of our health and healing community can sail on the words I speak, the air I exhale, and the air stream providing momentum on the journey to wellness.

The art project was another interesting experience.  When I created the representation of air the color I used was pink.  I associate pink with healthy lungs and easy breathing.  The physical manifested itself creatively giving me a visual cue to keep in my consciousness during my health and healing visualizations.    Find a way to connect with nature because you are a part of nature.  Having these connections will keep you engaged in your health and healing journey in new ways.
