Milk...Does it Do a Body Good?

Posted Oct 14 2008 7:22am

Yesterday the recommendation was for children to have their Vitamin D intake doubled from 200 units to 400 units per day.  Four Hundred units would require a child to drink at least a quart of milk a day.  That may be great when you're older, but can an infant do that?  I don't think so.  This means that it's going to be important to add supplements to your child's diet.

That's only the beginning because it's not just kids who are Vitamin D deficient.  There is an increase between certain illnesses and Vitamin D deficiency.  A few months ago information came out about the impact of Vitamin D on breast cancer and mortality.  The number of illnesses looking at Vitamin D deficiency is increasing.

There is a recent study that shows that Parkinson's patients have a lower Vitamin D level than Alzheimer's patients or healthy patients.  Another study found that children with Cystic Fibrosis who are Vitamin D deficient and receiving supplemental therapies are still falling short when their Vitamin D levels were measured.

We used to get Vitamin D from the sun.  Our skin was the Vitamin D factory.  Over the years with the increase in skin cancer we are less inclined to go out in the sun and when we do sunscreen defends against the production of Vitamin D.

Vitamin D's reach is far greater than simiply building strong bones.  It can be the key to unleashing treatment strategies for those facing life-threatening illness.  Let's encourage more research.
