Intuition is the clear conception of the whole at once.
- Johann Kaspar Lavater
Accessing intuition is using the wise part of ourselves for guidance in leading a full life. In today’s luminary interview, I have Angela Artemis from Powered by Intuition , a coach on intuition, to share with us her expertise. Q. There are many of us who do not know what intuition means. From your own personal perspective, can you share what it is?
A. Intuition is “knowledge” mined from the subconscious when we need it. It is not part of our normal thinking process. Our mind stores data even if we are not consciously aware of it. When we have a problem to resolve the mind searches every piece of stored information that it filed away. When the answer is found it pops into our mind and often feels as if it came from out of the blue. That’s why we refer to it as a “Eureka or Aha moment.”
Intuition is also knowledge that the mind pulls in from beyond what is stored in our physical brain. This is what some people might refer to as “psychic” information. For example, when you “know” without a doubt that your child or loved one is hurt or has been in an accident this information comes to you via your intuition.
Think of the entire world as if were of a network of interconnected spider webs. Each of us is spinning our own web with our thoughts and emotions. When something happens to someone their thoughts patterns and emotions cause a “disturbance” in their own web that we perceive because our webs are all connected. Your intuition is the “fine silk thread” that registers every movement in the Universe within this infinite web.
[My Comment: Oh wow...I enjoy the metaphor of the spiderweb. It makes things easier for me to understand. Thanks, Angela!]
Q. What advantages can we hope to possibly derive from developing our intuition?
A. Developing our intuition gives us access to greater information. This is especially helpful when we have decisions and choices to make in life. Making the right choice or picking the right course of action can mean the difference between a smashing success and an endeavor where we face constant challenges and struggles.
Q. You have already been using your intuitive abilities ever since you were a child. Can you share about how connecting to your intuition has been like for you?
A. I began giving readings when I was eleven years old. Being able to read for others helped me to develop confidence in my abilities except – when it came to making my own decisions. My parents were quite overbearing and didn’t allow me to make many of my own decisions. I understand now that they were only doing what they thought was right but, being told that I didn’t know what was best for me all the time caused me to discount my own feelings. As a consequence I was totally disconnected from my inner voice until I was well into my thirties.
This is why I started Powered by Intuition . I never want anyone to have to suffer like I did for 35 years second-guessing themselves and making the wrong decisions in life. Tapping into your intuition is true freedom! Knowing that you have an inner compass that will guide you anywhere you wish to go is the key to complete confidence and mastery in life.
[My Comment: I wish I have known earlier about the benefits of using intuition too. I relied too much on my logic previously. For a while, I was even afraid that I do not have any intuitive abilities altogether! But I am glad to know that I have been mistaken.]
Q. You seem to have a natural gift. But what about those of us who do not appear to be intuitively gifted? Is it possible for everyone to develop intuition?
A. Yes, absolutely! Being intuitive is no different than developing a really good golf swing or anything else you wish to do well at. We’re all intuitive. The only difference is your desire to become better at it. For example I don’t have the slightest interest in becoming a super golfer but, I’m sure with a few lessons I could become a better golfer. I will never be a “Tiger Woods” though because I’m not at all interested in golf.
It’s the same with intuition.
Those of us who have a natural inclination to pursue developing our intuition will be better at it simply because we have a desire to be better at it and because we practice it more often. If you wish to improve all it takes is the desire and practice.
[My Comment: I am sure what you have just shared will be a relief to all those who believe that they are not naturally gifted LOL! It is never too late to get started.]
Q. I sometimes face the difficulty of differentiating between the voices of my ego versus my intuition. My difficulty stems when I am attached to the outcome. In what ways can I make the differentiation?
A. Being attached to an outcome will squelch your intuition. When we’re attached it comes from the rational/ego mind and, you will know it’s the ego because you will keep second guessing yourself. We want what we want! But, intuition doesn’t work that way. Intuition is pure knowledge devoid of ego. It’s like that famous line from the 1960s television show Dragnet, “Just the facts ma’am.”
When you want to hear a certain answer your desire and attachment will drown out your intuition. You need to let go and not think about what you want. Repeat affirmations such as, “I now let go and release this outcome to the higher wisdom of the Universe.” Take walks – do anything to get your mind off the problem. Release your attachment and accept that the answer will reveal itself to you.
You’ll find the answer will come to you when you’re relaxed and least expect it. You will know it to be the truth because it will resonate deep inside you as a “knowing”. You will feel “settled” and no longer second guess yourself. It may also feel like a “revelation” which I mentioned earlier as the “Eureka” moment.
[My Comment: Hey, I like that affirmation tip! Thanks!]
Q. Some of us block our intuition because we are afraid to “see” what is normally not visible or to experience anything beyond our five senses. How can we overcome this fear?
A. This can come from a fear of making a mistake. If you fear being “wrong” you will block your intuition. To work with your intuitive abilities you have to take a leap of faith. It’s like trying to run and play freely while having a fear of falling. If you have a fear of falling you’ll never really let go and play with abandon, right? Let go of the fear of being “wrong”.
Also, when we fear the answers from our intuition what we are really afraid of is having to change and losing control. We hold onto things because we really don’t want to change or upset the way things are.
For example, say you keep asking the same question: What’s my true purpose in life? And, you feel as if you never get an answer. The reason you block your intuition could be because if you heard it – you might have to leave the comfort and security of your job and steady paycheck or leave your marriage and deep down you’re not ready or willing to do that. You’d rather stay with the “status quo” so you block your intuition.
To overcome any of these fears you have to ready – like anything else.
[My Comment: Hmmm....it is interesting to know that fear can block us from connecting to our intuition. Then again, I am not surprised.]
Q. How can we start developing our intuition? What are the steps that we can take?
A. To start developing your intuition you need to have a desire to develop it. Like anything else you must have a clear intention about what you want first. Read my books on the topic, study with a mentor or join an intuitive development group.
You also need to devote time each day to paying attention to your thoughts. The best way to do this is to practice meditation. Getting quiet and listening to your thoughts is the first step in discerning a regular thought from an intuitive one. Keep a notebook at your side when you meditate. Write down any thoughts that come to you while meditating. When you create a space in your life for your intuition to come through such as with meditation, you’ll begin to get insights and answers to problems. Be sure to write them down so you don’t forget them.
I have a number of guided meditation exercises in my book, “The Intuition Principle: How to Attract the Life You Dream Of” that will help you to learn to hear the inner guidance of your intuition and distinguish it from your other thoughts. I also devote an entire chapter to things that suppress your intuition.
Q. What is the most important message from your book that you hope to share with others?
A. Intuition is the key to unearthing the “life instruction manual” each of us has within us. Awakening your intuition puts you on the “right” path – the one you were meant to take in life.
Constant struggle is a sign of not being on the right path or aligned with your right purpose. The guidance to help you navigate life and find your true purpose will become clear once you learn how to follow your intuition. When you activate the “Intuition Principle” you unleash a magnetic force out into the Universe which bring your dreams, desires and the world right to you easily and elegantly.
[My Comment: I am certainly intending to continue on developing my intuition. Unleashing a magnetic force certainly sounds awesome to me, since I am all for creating a life of abundance! Thank you for your answers, Angela!]
