Her Spirit is Strong, Her Body is Weak

Further dispatches from the ICU:

Becki writes:

I spoke with the nurse (Drew) a few minutes ago.

Mom is alert, awake and watching TV.  Drew said she is depressed about being in the hospital.  She is now on the bipap most of the time because every time they take her off of it to give her medication, whatever, her O2 drops.

Drew said he was trying to get her to eat something, but she said she was too nauseous to eat.

They have been giving her diuretics and antibiotics to stave off pneumonia.  The yeast infection is looking better, but Drew said it would be a week or so before it will be cleared up.

I asked Drew to ask Mom if she would like me to come out for a visit.  I have not seen Mom since Saturday.  I am not sure if she wants to see anyone.  I just don’t know what to do.

I wrote to Bex and told her that not eating is pretty much par for the course for Mom’s condition.  And as far as does Mom want to see her or not?  There’s only one person to ask.

She wrote again a bit later.

I just got a call back from Drew.  He spoke with Mom.  He said when he told Mom that he spoke to me, she got a big smile on her face.  She told him to tell me that she loves me very much but she did not want me to come out there, that I should just stay home today.  Drew said it would be too hard on her, she has a problem talking with the bipap on.

I told him to let her know that we all love her very much.  I told him the staff could call me at any time, but I would not call them back until tomorrow for an update.

It makes me very happy to know that our Mom knows that Joe, Becki and I, and most of her grandkids and great-grandkids are focusing a big, powerful beam of love at her.
