Crying Baby Saves My Niece’s Life!

Posted Jun 19 2010 6:58am

Say what you will, but we believe a crying baby saved my niece’s life!

Yesterday we got the word that my niece, Rose, had a stroke on Wednesday.  Her mom, Kerri, woke up at 5:15 that morning because Rose’s 8-day old baby was crying.  That was unusual, Kerri said, because Rose was a good little mommy and seemed to anticipate that baby’s every need.

She went into Rose’s room and found Rose slumped over the edge of the bed.  She had vomited, could not move her left side, and her speech was slurred.

Moments later an ambulance was summoned, she was whisked to the local hospital, then airlifted to the Medical Center in Iowa City (one of the best in the world, mind you), where they did emergency surgery.  They took off the right-front part of her skull to allow her brain to swell without killing her.  They placed her in a medically-induced coma.  Then they said all we could do was wait.

Yesterday, Rose woke up.  She could talk, move all her limbs and showed no huge neurological deficits.  The bleed was in the right that means it won’t affect her , memory, language or anything like that.  It may influence her personality and cause her to have some problems with , making plans, decision making… things like that.

Rose’s doctor told Kerri that if you are going to have a brain bleed, the right frontal lobe is where you want to have it.

She still has a way to go, but she seems to be out of danger.  Thank God for a crying baby, an alert Grandma who didn’t panic and acted quickly under pressure.

I’ll never say anything negative about crying babies again.  Until the next time there’s one behind me on an airplane.
