Toddler Interpreter: Teaching Sign Language to Your Hearing Child (Giveaway)
Posted Jul 22 2009 10:15pm
Before my twins learned to talk, we had a lot of success in teaching them to communicate through basic sign language. It was so cute to see their little hands form the sign for “more” or “cookie.” I was amazed at how quickly they caught on! Of course, I first had to educate myself on learning the signs before I could teach them to my kids. I did find some great resources, but I wish that Toddler Interpreter had been published! This brand-new, full-color book by Ian Creaser and Lisa Baade BSC is an excellent guide for teaching baby sign language to your hearing baby or toddler. Toddler Interpreter divides teaching sign language into five stages. Each stage contains 12 new signs. Twenty valuable tips are provided for signing success, such as teaching one sign at a time and making sure to present the signs during relevant situations. For instance, don’t try to teach your child the sign for milk when you’re driving in the car. Do it when he’s in his high chair and you can actually bring a cup of milk in response to the sign! I especially love the colorful photographs that show precisely how to make each sign. There’s also a Quick Reference Dictionary at the end of the book where you can quickly look up a desired sign.
Coauthor Lisa Baade has generously offered two copies of Toddler Interpreter: A Parent’s Guide to Baby Sign Language for Hearing Babies and Toddlers as a giveaway! Here’s how you can win a copy:
