So while Aaron and I had decided ...

Posted Jan 27 2009 7:30pm

So while Aaron and I had decided that with the referral of twins we would start our own Christmas traditions, we would also not make this holiday two days of intense traveling and told our families of such intentions; both families took it so well that we wondered why we had not done it sooner (maybe the kid factor). So this year Christmas lasted four days and we had a great time celebrating each time – I am going to try to talk about the old family traditions that we did as well as the new ones Aaron and I decided on!

So Christmas number 1 was on Christmas Eve, as part of a tradition that goes as far back as I remember we went to my Grandpa’s house. I remember as a child being so excited to go to grandma and grandpa’s and how disappointed I was the one year we missed it because of a snow storm. We always have cold cuts and deer salami plus chips and cheese and crackers and my favorite cheese ball and the pie oh the pie! Anyway the presents always end up in the middle of grandpa’s floor and while we were waiting for my sister to get there Little Man decided that he would help my grandpa’s girlfriend open her presents – as in he just put one her presents on the floor and started tearing paper (we had let them “open” some wrapped candy we had received earlier in the day as some practice and so he knew what he was doing) when Little Princess saw what Little Man was doing she joined in…

My oldest nephew was chosen to play Santa and he started handing out gifts. Everyone received some really nice things, including the twins and they were helping EVERYONE open their gifts. My favorite picture in the last post was Little Princess looking at her daddy to make sure that she could open that gift as she had just been picked up for trying to open one of her cousin’s presents. I had asked for my grandpa to get them the Radio Flyer Inchworm – as we had one at his house when we were little and I remember playing on it (my mom informed me that the one at his house was my sister’s but I still remember it – she also says that he still has it)…I thought that since he gives money for their college fund in the form of savings bonds that there was NO WAY they would get the Inchworm so I was surprised when they opened it as their first gift–

I was so excited that I put it together and let them play with it but since I was helping them play there are no pictures of them playing on it. We started a tradition that I love, we gave them their Christmas Eve PJ’s then as well…every year they will get their Christmas PJ’s on Christmas Eve! Another thing we did this year that I hope becomes a yearly tradition is a picture of all the grandchildren (my mom is an only child), a picture of all the grandchildren and grandma and grandpa and then a picture of all the grandchildren with their great-grandpa (my grandpa) – I would post my favorites of those pictures but I didn’t ask my brother or his wife’s permission to post them and I would hate to put their kids out here so openly without their permission. Little Princess was so sacked she fell asleep before pie but Little Man ate a whole piece of coconut cream pie himself! When we got home they were both up for a bit and we started a tradition that we both agree we love – we read them the Christmas story from the bible and used their Little People Nativity to play and let them see a bit of the story! Off to bed…

Christmas #2 was Christmas morning – we started another tradition that I LOVE   - before we opened a gift but after breakfast we made a birthday cake for Jesus. Little Princess was just fascinated with the mixer and laughed while we used it! Sorry no pictures of the completed cake – it just hit me I should have taken pictures of the cake! (But trust me after I frosted it – the cake looked like the twins had frosted it!) Since they were still small enough that I could I cleaned up before opening presents as our living room looked like a tornado had hit. After that we let Little Princess go first to open her gifts. Another tradition that we started is that they will get an outfit from mom and dad and a book (well and their PJs on Christmas Eve) and then Santa will bring them (1) something they want – most likely a toy (2) something they need – most likely clothes or shoes (3) a book and (4) their stockings. I know that does not seem like much but they will get so much from everyone combined and the real reason for the season is NOT gifts. So this year the books were all together as there were 26 books (one for each letter of the alphabet), they got 3 outfits each (two from mom and dad and one from Santa) and then their toys from Santa – Little Princess got an animal train she picked out during a shopping trip – she did great at opening gifts until this one

dsc_0119

This is what happened – she stuck her hand in and realized what it was and would not go any further she played with the toy through the paper until we relented and opened the gift for her! I was laughing so hard I got no pictures of her actually smiling at the gift! Little Man got two shake n go cars – at Thanksgiving he played with his cousin’s and he LOVED them and had been shaking cars to see if they made noise and went since then so he naturally LOVED his gift…after he realized what they wereJ

We then got ready and went to Aaron’s grandmother’s for the afternoon and evening where we had a GREAT time and took only 3 pictures. Aaron’s Aunt and Uncle and one of his cousins had not met the twins until then and we were having so much fun we forgot about the camera!

(Little Princess’ animal train is what she and daddy are playing with…) We opened no gifts this day we were waiting until Saturday when the twin’s cousin could be there as well. But we stayed up late talking etc…I went to put Little Princess to sleep and she fell asleep with me rocking her and so I took her in and laid her on a blanket on her great-grandma’s floor thinking she was asleep and put the blanket on her and walked out. I went to the kitchen and was playing with Little Man and Aaron when I heard everyone laughing since they were watching Elf I thought that is what they were laughing at but when I turned around I received a surprise – they were laughing at Little Princess, she had crawled out to the living room and had the biggest smile on her face as if she was all that and then some! I started laughing as well and let her stay up for awhile longer as it seemed she wanted to be upJ

Christmas #3 was at my mom and dad’s – we had so much fun! The twins tried some new foods that they loved no shock there and Grandma completely ignored me and gave each one two m&m’s which they also LOVED! They received so many nice things but here is where another family tradition comes into play – they got pedal tractors from Grandma and Grandpa (and they loved them – even if we had to push them on them)

dsc_0081

Yep it is a dooley – and my oldest nephew I think was a tad jealousJAnd wait for it – check out Little Princess’s tractor:

dsc_00921

Yep it is pink and has a wagon which the puppy wanted to ride in (or Aunt Caylin wanted him to ride in) – the decals are not on her’s yet but it didn’t matter we still only have a VW Passat and could not get the tractors home if we wanted to! Grandma and Grandpa will be bringing them over in Grandpa’s truck when it gets warmer! My brother now insists that we need a mini-van and I still say NO WAY…

But at this Christmas they decided that all the gifts were for both of them and worked together to open almost every gift:

dsc_0031

This gift was actually Little Man’s – haha!

Christmas #4 was Saturday and back at Aaron’s grandma’s – once again a HUGE haul of toys and books and their big gift here was a sweet Radio Flyer Wagon (which I have no pictures of since they were not interested in it) My favorite gifts they received at this Christmas – My First Ears from Aunt Amy and Uncle Brian who live in CA and were nice enough to go to Disney to get these – I have TONS of pictures for them and will e-mail you a link later Amy:

And they got Little Man a shirt that says “Mommy’s Little Man” another of Mommy’s favorite gifts from this Christmas! (I see more picture time in our future!)

And this picture shows what happens when three children under three decide to try to open ALL their Christmas toys at once (and we stopped them after a few!) Also this is only part of the chaos…

dsc_0259

All in all we had a GREAT Christmas – I never in a million years thought that after a pretty depressing Christmas last year (mostly because still no children) would I have a Christmas outfit schedule, a nap schedule, too little car space to get all the gifts home, one Christmas tree that never got decorated and another that is still bare on the top foot (it was too far for me to reach without a stool), Christmas shopping that was not complete until December 26 th, and a constant smile while watching the mayhem that was Christmas but that is EXACTLY what it was and I LOVED every minute of it.

Aaron and I received tons of wonderful gifts BUT the best gift we received happened when we picked up the twins in October. I didn’t cry once this Christmas because of some cute thing a niece or nephew did and thought that could be my child – instead it was OUR child that had everyone laughing Christmas Day (though I did cry just because it was all so great and better than I ever could have imagined). This year could not have been better and I have everything I want right here!

So while Aaron and I had decided that with the referral of twins we would start our own Christmas traditions, we would also not make this holiday two days of intense traveling and told our families of such intentions; both families took it so well that we wondered why we had not done it sooner (maybe the kid factor).
