Sid the Science Kid / Dive Olly Dive review & GIVEAWAY!!

Posted Aug 25 2009 10:51pm
I admit that we are a TV watching family. What can I say? We like TV! But that doesn't mean I let my kids watch just anything. I am always on the lookout for BETTER shows for kids -shows that will actually fill their brains instead of turn them to mush :) .

I was given the opportunity to review Dive Olly Dive: Ship Shape Sub, and Sid the Science Kid: Change Happens and The Bug Club.
ABOUT THE SHOW (from the website ) :

Dive Olly Dive follows the adventures of Olly, a young submarine-in-training, and Beth, his best friend and fellow sub-in-training. Stationed at the Special Underwater Research Facility (S.U.R.F.) under the guidance of Diver Doug, the young subs explore their spectacular underwater world.

Joining Olly and Beth are Skid, Doug's sleek transport vehicle; Brandt, a cantankerous hermit crab who imagines himself as a pirate; UMA, an eight-appendaged Underwater Maintenance Assistant; Ranger, a tiny cowboy seahorse who wrangles his herd of squid; Shankley, the Scottish sea crane who spins tales of the deep seas; Suzy, the awesome aerobatic seas plane; and Luseal, the fun-loving, athletic seal.

Whether carrying out a research assignment for Diver Doug, playing in spectacular Lava Rock Park, or evading the dangers found in Dark Trench, there's never a dull moment in Olly's world.
Olivia (age 2) really enjoyed this DVD. It kept her attention and made her laugh out loud several times. Owen (age 5) also enjoyed Olly and has asked to watch it several times since we got it. Even Aiden (age 7) watched a few of the episodes with his younger siblings. I really appreciated the life lessons and thought they were expressed in a perfectly age-appropriate way. You can find more information on the website HERE.

About the Program (from the website ):

" Sid the Science Kid" is a new educational animated television series using comedy to promote exploration, discovery and science readiness among preschoolers. This landmark production of 40 half-hour episodes, co-produced by The Jim Henson Company and KCET/Los Angeles for PBS KIDS®, debuts on September 1, 2008, as part of the popular PBS KIDS preschool destination, the hosted two-hour morning block and online destination.

" Sid the Science Kid", The Jim Henson Company's first series for PBS KIDS that features a practical in-school science curriculum, uses music and humor to celebrate children's natural curiosity about science in everyday life. The energetic and inquisitive Sid starts each episode with a new question ("Why are my shoes shrinking?" "Why do bananas get mushy?") and embarks on a fun-filled day of finding answers with the help of family and friends.

We LOVE Sid the Science Kid! I think it is one of my favourite kid's show on TV right now. It teaches in an incredibly kid friendly, entertaining way. Plus it isn't super annoying for the adults in the room :). Technically this series is geared to kids age 3-6 but all three of my kids (2, 5, 7) really enjoy it. We have watched both Sid the Science Kid DVD's several times since we got them two weeks ago.

I especially appreciate how this series shows a child who loves his family, loves his friends and loves his school. Sid loves to learn and my children are completely drawn to his enthusiasm.

These are kid's shows that you can show your children guilt-free!

Sid the Science Kid has an excellent website for kids as well as an information-packed section for parents and teachers HERE. It has everything from their educational philosophy and series viewing tips to activities and resources. If you are a teacher for this age group you should really check out this site!
