sensory dysfunction down on the farm

Posted Jan 27 2009 7:02pm

So I got the pics back from Daniel’s class field trip to the farm in Lodi.

It was at a farm/winery so we saw lots of grapes, smelled lots of fermenting grapes, the pumpkin patch of course along with the pre-requisite hayride and some hands on time with some of the farm animals: rabbits, sheep, goats, miniature horses, ducks, chickens, roosters, turkeys including an unfortunate Tom who fancied himself to be a duck….reminded me of the duck who thought he was a rooster in Babe.

The rain held up mostly. It was just that drizzly crap that muddies your car but not enought to warrant using the wipers. It also was just enough to annoy Daniel. The kid practically drowns himself when I bathe him but he hates raindrops on his head. There were several schools and a wine tours group at the farm when we were there, so it was crowded. This, with the drizzle, stressed Daniel out a bit. He seemed to have a lot of fun, on his own terms, but sometimes he looked like he was having no fun at all…..as long as I allowed him to explore on his terms rather than the class’ objectives or the tour guide’s or even my own, he was fine and loving the sights, sounds and smells of the farm.

I wish I had animal pics to share but I was busy holding on to him and reassuring him they were not scary. The rooster and the goats were a little too much for him….personally the goats are a bit much for mama too…..it’s their rectangular shaped pupils that freak me a bit. I wish he was a little more relaxed because it was sweet to watch him pet this one duck who took a liking to Daniel as well and a little rabbit who cowered from other children only to hop into Daniel’s lap and give him a “bunny kiss” with his cold, wet nose.

Any concern I might have had that he did not have a good time was lost as he chattered non-stop about bunnies, duckies, punkins, flowers and BIG TRUCKS with his daddy before bedtime. Once again, I am reminded of the lesson I seem to keep forgetting, it’s on Daniel’s terms and timetable, never my own.
