Aromatherapy encourages the attitude that prevention is better than cure for these common postpartum woes. Tangerine and lavender oils have been shown to promote healthy skin cells when combined in either a moisturizing cream or a massage oil. This can help keep skin supple and elastic and prevent stretch marks.

Reducing Postpartum Scar Tissue
I had a cesarean section and then 6 months later abdomenal surgery (reopened c section incision with major clamping bruises-ouch!) to remove a large 4 1/2 pound fibroid from my uterus. You can read how lavender essential oil helped stop my preterm labor in my complicated pregnancy here: My Lavender Story. I understand scar painitchingand the extreme discomfort of having a newborn kick that area of my abdomen! Essential oils were very valuable for reducing or minimizing the formation of scar tissue as well as fighting infection at the incision site. Remember not to mix essential oils with any petroleum or antibiotic based creams as chemical interaction can occur. Three years later nowmy incision scar has almost disappeared.
I made one recipe with Lavender and one with Frankincense to rotate daily. After rubbing in several drops of the blend until it was totally absorbedI smeared Young Living Essential Oils Rose Ointmentover the entire scarred area to seal in the essential oilsprotect the incisionand soothe the healing itch.
Getting Rid Of Cellulite
Cellulite can affect those who are thin as often as it affects those who are overweight. Women tend to accumulate cellulite at times of hormonal flucuations and are therefore far more prone to it during pregnancy. It occurs when the body's elimination processes aren't functioning properly. In addition to hormonal changesother causes are constipationlack of exercisefatigueand filling the body with toxins like tobaccoalcoholas well as teacoffeeanimal fatsand dairy products. Cellulite goes hand in hand with having poor circulation and poor lymphatic drainage.
Aromatherapy can help with cellulitebut treatment isn't recommended until six months after birth. To make a concentrated effort to remove cellulite involves a strict detoxification diet and may include a lymph drainage massage program. A good quality digestive cleanseand liver cleansing routine helps speed up the process. Neither is advisible until you are fully healedespecially if you are breast feeding. In the meantimecutting back on fat intakedrinking plenty of water and getting regular exercise like walkingcyclingor swimming is beneficial to begin flushing toxins from your system.
