I was called to attend a birth because of worrisome decelerations in the fetal heart rate. The OB wanted to err on the conservative side by having the NICU team on standby just in case. So once again I was fortunate to be a witness to the birth of a family. The young mother worked through her unmedicated labor supported by her sweet, attentive husband who anticipated her needs and supported her well as she delivered their first born…a girl!
The girl looked a little limp and pale so the the OB handed her off to me. I quickly got to work drying her off and stimulating her to wake up and take that oh-so important first breath. After an endless thirty seconds, she grimaced, raised her chubby, newborn arms and let out a long, lusty wail as if to complain about all of this unwanted attention. Her color soon became the rosy, newborn pink that I love so much in a newborn baby. She was fine.
I quickly weighed her and brought her over to mom’s waiting arms. As I offered congratulations and assurances to mommy and daddy that all was well, I asked them what was this sweet little princess’ name. Mommy sighed and explained that they hadn’t chosen it for her yet. I smiled demurely and offered that “Laura” was a pretty great name for a baby girl. Mommy and Daddy look at their brand-new daughter then into each other’s eyes smiling and say in unison, “Laura!”
Welcome to the world baby Laura!
