Australia is banning its 2007 Toy of the Year after investigators discovered a chemical coating toy beads can metabolize into the date-rape drug after being ingested, reports Reuters .
“Three Australian children suffered seizures and needed intensive hospital care in the past two weeks after eating the plastic beads,” writes Reuters.
The chemical, which coats toy beads called “Bindeez,” is supposed to serve as a non-toxic glue once sprayed with water. Instead, a different chemical was found on the toys, which can become the date rate drug, also known as fantasy or Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH.)
Toy importer Moose Enterprise is voluntarily recalling the 1 million toys, which were made in China. Authorities were unclear how the toxic chemical replaced the approved, safe version.
