Gone are the days when only children actors and actresses are home schooled. Nowadays, even kids of common families can be home schooled. More and more parents are looking into the possibility of home schooling their kids because they recognize the benefits brought upon by home schooling.
Pros of Home Schooling
Here are some reason why home schooling is a popular set-up:
1 - You save a lot of money.
The parents as teachers set-up has one clear benefit – you get to save a lot of money. You don't need to pay expensive tuition, unless you decide to give yourself a huge raise as the teacher. You also don't need to give your children that big of an allowance because everything that they need is in your home.
2 - You can go straight to the point and teach the things that matter.
Schools tend to add useless things to the curriculum to cover one whole school year. You can avoid this if you're going to teach your children in a home school.
3 - You can teach them things not taught in the usual classroom environment.
A lot of things that matter in real life are not taught in school. How to handle money is something that you can teach your kids. You can also teach them the “birds and the bees” which unfortunately, most kids learn outside the home and outside the classroom.
4 - You create a bond with your children.
Sure, you should ensure that there is a clear line between being parents and parents as teachers. But at the end of the day, you are still parents and your children will appreciate the time and effort that you put in to ensure that they're getting good education. This can create a good emotional bond. Of course, this can also create a physical bond because you're physically there.
Did you know that most children spend more time with their teachers than their parents? This is because they spend the whole day in school and when they're home, they're either doing their homework or sleeping. You can avoid this by having a parents as teachers set-up.
5 - You can protect your children better.
There are a lot of bad things happening out there in the real world. If they're at home with you, you lessen the risks.
Cons of a Parents as Teachers Set-Up
1 - Lack of social interaction with peers
The biggest disadvantage is the lack of social growth. This is because of the lack of social interaction with other people because they don't have classmates or other teachers. You can easily work around this by making sure that you include it in your curriculum. For example, you can set-up “field trips” for social interactions. You can also encourage your kids to socialize after school.
2 - Fear of the real world
In addition, some home schooled kids tend to be afraid of the real world. Expose your kids to the real world by letting them know what's out there and having them experience the real world to cover for this.
At the end of the day, the parents as teachers set-up presents a lot of benefits that it's understandable why a lot of parents are now considering it.
