Of course you need to first rule out anything medical - note when he complains, and what he was doing before the complaint - running, sitting, etc. Does he complain upon waking? Does the pain waken him at night? Take those details to the doctor to rule out anything worrysome.
Sore bones, in one of my girls was a regular occurrence at bed time and through the night. Sometimes even in the day for about 3 months - it was nothing but "growing pains" I assume. A nice hot pad and lots of sympathy did wanders for my girl. :D
