There have been many places online in the past week that have discussed
the concept of "one word". Basically, you pick one word to describe your
theme for the next year. I stayed away from it, mostly because I don't
like to be a follow the crowd person, I don't like to be told what to do (haha, big stunner there, I know!)
and also because – hello, I don't
think I could find a word.
After all, my first choice of words might be
"sleep", "coffee", or maybe "pizza".
But, actually, the more I think about it, the more I've discovered that I
really do want to pick a word. Because, more than anything, the last
two months have taught me one thing – I struggle with consistency. Sure,
I start out going great gangbusters on lots of things. I have the
greatest of intentions, and began many, many projects, sometimes all at
once. Organization? Sure, let's try that. Eating well? Okay, I'll give
it a stab. The same goes for couponing, saving money, cutting spending –
I start out 1000% with all of those, but it soon falls by the wayside.
Even my writing: I try to keep up with that, on all fronts, not just
here, but it doesn't take long for me to get out of the habit. I always
start off with lots of energy and enthusiasm, but it soon leaves me and
I'm back almost right started.
So, for this year, I decided that my keyword will be – wait for it –
"constant". I'm going to try to be constant in my life. Constant has a
different meaning than consistent. Consistency means trying all the
time, and constant just means ongoing.
At least that's the way that I
So, as one of my martial arts instructors used to say, "Practice makes
habit. Practice doesn't make perfect." - I'm going to spend 2013 learning
to practice being constant – constant in my life, constant in my
writing, constant in my efforts to live a healthy lifestyle, constant in
my efforts to try to be a better me.
Will you join me? What word would you pick as your mantra for 2013?
