I’ve mentioned before that my children go to a church school and that we are not religious. The Husband and I both went to church schools and I really don’t have any religious feelings either way.
The 5 year old, now in reception, keeps coming home and saying things like “You do realise that God made that tree, don’t you Mummy?” and “God lives up there in the sky”. The 6 year old’s early religious beliefs are documented here .
Today at the 6 year old’s parents evening I went into the classroom and sat on a very small chair. I always feel gangly and Gulliver like when I sit on one of those chairs. The 6 year old’s teacher Mrs D is lovely. Before we started on anything she enthusiastically said “I’ve just got to show you this”…
She produced an A3 piece of paper with the words ‘My Hobby’ in bubble writing across the top. It was my daughters work. There were prompts and then the 6 year old had written something for each of the prompts and drawn lots of little pictures of people kneeling and looking at the sky.
What is your hobby – Praying is my hobby, I do it all the time.
Where do you do your hobby? I pray in the garden so I can feel close to nature.
What do you wear for your hobby? I have a very colourful dress that I wear, it has every colour on it. I also have a special blanket.
Any other information about your hobby? If it rains I pray inside.
Mrs D was beside herself with joy and said she’d shown it around the other teachers.
Under my breath, so I wouldn’t be struck down by lightening, but just so she could hear I said “You do know we don’t go to church don’t you?” … She pretended not to hear me and said that my little girl is a deep thinker and very thoughtful.
She said that all the other children’s hobbies were predictably football, swimming, dancing, rugby, reading and the like.
Unpredictably, it seems, I’m raising a nun.
