Kaplan Test Drive Mom & Son

Posted Oct 19 2010 12:00am

There are many things that Johnny is passionate about.  Unfortunately, school isn’t one of them.  Ultimately, we want A’s and B’s, but understand C’s.  We ask for effort.  I don’t know what kind of parent it makes me, but I thought that he had it together.

Then, we received mid-terms.  And I wanted to cry.  C’s, D’s and F’s – and I thought he was doing pretty good, I mean homework was completed, we had adjusted the attitude and then this.

No joke, right before we received the midterms I signed up for this campaign – and it couldn’t have come at a better time.  The next 8 weeks Johnny is going to work 2 hours per week on the K aplan Tutoring online learning program.  In turn, we’re going to monitor his progress.

Information from Kaplan Tutoring :

The Online Learning Program is driven by Kaplan’s exclusive Smart Track system. Smart Track creates a personalized learning plan for your child that continually adapts through these 4 steps:

1.    Assess: Your child starts with math and reading assessments to determine current skill levels. It is critical that your child completes these assessments independently to provide an accurate picture of your child’s skill levels.
Tip: During assessments, Smart Track will not tell your child if answers are right or wrong – don’t worry! Smart Track will teach any skills your child does not understand in online lessons.

2.    Teach: Next, your child enters interactive lessons that teach new skills, provide guided practice, then ask your child to demonstrate mastery through independent practice questions.
Tip: Smart Track remembers where lessons end when your child logs off, so your child can log in for as little as 20 minutes each session and still benefit! No matter how you choose to schedule online sessions, we recommend at least 2 hours of online learning each week.

3.    Motivate: In addition to the fun characters in online lessons, the time your child spends working online also earns points to redeem in our popular online Reward Zone.
Tip: Your child starts off with 100 points to use in the Reward Zone. Browse rewards with your child and have your child select a few reward goals. Having a goal in mind helps kids stay motivated to complete assessments and lessons.

4.    Adapt: After your child masters new skills, Smart Track will provide another assessment to customize the next lessons your child sees based on current skill levels.

I’m excited.  I hope that this helps Johnny improve in his school work and it’s something that he can work on in the privacy of our own home.  It’s going to take effort on both our side as parents and his side as a student, don’t worry – we’ll keep you updated.

*I wrote this review while participating in a Test Drive Program by Mom Central on behalf of Kaplan and received the products necessary to facilitate my review. In addition, I received a gift certificate to thank me for taking the time to participate.*
