Hooked on The Hunger Games *Giveaway*

Posted Jul 09 2010 12:00am

When I was busy with my online class this spring, I didn’t have a chance to read like I normally do.  My friend, Denise, told me about an amazing book called The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and said that it was a “must read”.  Well, I wrote it down on my list and planned to get to it sometime.

That sometime came and oh my stars!  I loved this book…so much so I stayed up late into the night last Friday reading and I can happily report that I finished it during my lunch break on Saturday.

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capital surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capital is harsh and cruel and keeps the other districts in line by forcing them to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight-to-the death on live TV. One boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and sixteen are selected by lottery to play. The winner brings riches and favor to his or her district. But that is nothing compared to what the Capital wins: one more year of fearful compliance with its rules. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her impoverished district in the Games. But Katniss has been close to death beforeand survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love. Bestselling writer Suzanne Collins delivers equal parts suspense and philosophy, adventure and romance, in this stunning novel set in a future with unsettling parallels to our present.

The Hunger Games was just released in paperback form this week.  I can’t wait to get my hands on book two in the trilogy, Catching Fire and the release of the third in August, Mockingjay.  I’m anxious for Johnny to reach the age that he’ll enjoy this trilogy.  Get ready, in 2011 a movie adaption of The Hunger Games will be released through Lionsgate.  I can’t wait!
