When I last wrote about history, I explained that I didn’t want to start history until Sam got a better sense of time and place. She ramped up so quickly with those concepts that I was caught a bit off guard. I ended up doing a few of the early timeline projects from the Montessori curriculum: making an age chart including each member of the family, making a timeline of her own life using photos, etc. These were fun projects to insert into the school day here and there, and I think she benefited from them. But there isn’t much else to do but start with real history. I bought Susan Wise Bauer’s Story of the World and the accompanying activity book and we’re going to give them a try. If Sam doesn’t get intrigued with that, I’ll go back to the Montessori timelines and early history lessons. I still think we’ll do History at Our House in a year or two, but it’s definitely still too early for that.
