Healthy Moms Dictionary - Acne Vulgaris

Posted Nov 03 2008 1:11am

Acne vulgaris is the common form of skin acne and is also known as adult acne. The combination of hormones and how oily your skin is will determine weather or not you will get adult acne. Usually acne develops during puberty when the oil glands come to life and are stimulated by male hormones that are produced in the adrenal glands of both boys and girls.

There are several ways you can treat adult acne. Keeping your skin clean and avoiding irritating soaps, foods, drinks, and cosmetics are some of the best ways to reduce acne outbreaks. Here are a few more tips if you are suffering from acne vulgaris.

In the 1960's and 1970's doctors told teenagers suffering from acne to lay off of the cheeseburgers and french fries. This acne diet was controversial for a while until researchers found that after examining 1,200 residents of Papua New Guinea and 115 hunter gatherers in Paraguay not a single person had a case of acne. The researchers thought that diet may play a role in adolescent acne because nearly 95 percent of western teenagers suffer from acne outbreaks. The scientists thought that since the native people consume a diet that is low in trans fatty acids this diet could help control acne.

Acne can also be treated by over the counter medications such as Benzoyl Peroxide. This cream which is usually used to treat mild acne unplugs pores and discourages growth of skin bacteria. Make sure you follow the directions on the bottle. Overuse could lead to skin irritations such as dryness, rash, redness and scaling.

If your acne is not easily controlled by Benzoyl Peroxide you may need a prescription lotion or gel. Prescription gels such as Clindamycin also contain an added antibiotic. These gels may take up to two months to work but in the long run they are very effective in the treatment of acne.

There are also prescription pills that you can take to control your acne. If you've tried creams and gels and they haven't work pills are another option that you can discuss with your doctor.

A lot of people suffer from acne vulgaris. It is not just a problem for teenagers. With proper care and treatment your acne will clear up.
