This year marks Seth’s fourth Fourth of July. Amazingly, he’s never been out to see fireworks.
The first few years of his life it was obvious that he was not ready. Loud booming noises tended to upset him greatly, and we didn’t like to keep him up past 8:45 p.m. Last year, my wife was very pregnant and we just didn’t feel like fighting the crowds.
Another problem: most fireworks are organized affairs out here – you usually have to reserve a seat at the high school weeks in advance. Or you have to lay down a blanket along the right streets two to four days in advance.
Still, there are ways to watch the fireworks that don’t require much planning. Driving into the mountains, for example, provides a panoramic view of multiple firework displays in the surrounding valleys. Or we can just go to our big park and see them from a distance.
The fireworks are okay out here, but nothing like extravaganzas on the Intracoastal Waterway in West Palm Beach, Florida. There’s something about fireworks reflecting in the water that is just stunning.
Anyhoo, whether we ultimately go see fireworks or not, we wish you a Happy Fourth of July.
