Guess What We Saw Yesterday?

Posted Nov 06 2008 11:38pm

We have to leave soon to take Ry to chess class. He LOVES chess and is obsessed and Brendan plays a game with him about once a day. I was pretty impressed that he set up the board properly after only his second class and knows all the moves, even castling. I do think he wishes it was more like Wizard's Chess though--I often hear him make explosion sounds when he takes one of Brendan's pieces. I need to play him soon, lest he think I'm a chess dolt. But it's hard with Morgan, who tends to want to make up her own rules and gets mad when we disagree.

Anyway, that's not what I started to write about, as you are probably wondering what the title of the post is all about. On our walk yesterday, which takes us up and around the little pond in our neighborhood, we saw our first snake of the season! It was a brown watersnake, which look an awful lot like water moccasins. I'm 99% sure it was a watersnake though--no triangle head and he beat a hasty retreat. We found him sunning himself on the grass near the edge of the pond, a couple of feet from our walking path. He was a good 3 to 3 1/2 feet long. He zipped right into the water after we showed up and poked his head out, trying his best to look like a tree branch. He's very good at that.

At least, I hope it was a "he" as I understand that the "shes" can have up to 20-60 babies. I like looking at snakes, but I have my limits.
