Frequently Asked Questions About Baby Showers

Posted Jun 14 2010 11:07pm

Baby showers are parties thrown for friends that are pregnant . Although showers are often informal affairs , the practice has changed quite a bit over the course of the years and showers have gradually become more and more fancy .

Baby showers can make a pregnant friend feel more secure in the fact that her friends are all supportive as well as gifts in the form of much-needed supplies for her child-to-be .

There are a few things to know if you are organizing a shower for an expectant mother. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions:

Who arranges a baby shower? Usually , the baby shower is planned by friends . This has changed over the years and today it is not uncommon to find family members, friends, or neighbors planning the event.

Who should you invite? traditionally , the guest list will only include those nearest and dearest to the expectant mother in the form of friends and relatives. It may be beneficial to have the mother look at the guest list so that she can make suggestions as to who should be included . If you are planning a surprise baby shower, you will have to do some research on who should be attending rather than running the list through the expectant mother. If the child is not her first one , you may elect to keep the number of guests down to the closest to the mother . Firstborn baby showers tend to have a larger guest list since it is, after all, the mother’s first time and first-time mothers have the greatest needs for baby supplies. It is important to remember that the nature of baby showers is intimacy . So for any baby shower party, try making the gathering one of close friends.

How do you invite the guests ? You could use informal ways to invite the guests: phone calls, post cards and e-mail are all acceptable . Traditionally, formal cards and/or letters have been used , as they provide more reliable proof of invitation.

What about husbands or boyfriends ? Showers, by their very nature, are "feminine" events ; if the organizers of the party have some sort of diversion for the men, then inviting men would be fine. A lot of men may not be comfortable at a shower as such parties tend to involve a lot of “female ” subject matter. Ultimately it depends on the preference of the organizers.

Where do you hold a baby shower ? As long as it can keep with the nature of the occasion , any place would be fine . The more common places for showers are backyards, formal halls, restaurants, people's homes and basically any facility that has the amenities to make a baby shower successful . Ideally, the venue should not be crowded or stressful for the expectant mother .

When do you schedule a baby shower? Usually this is a month or two before the birth of the child . The baby shower is the ideal time to get the guest of honor those baby items she may not have had time to purchase yet. It has to be well-timed though – scheduling too close to the due date may result in an unexpected cancellation .

Baby showers are fun events for expecting mothers. It eases the stress of expecting a child and provides a means for friends to demonstrate support and concern (and of course, baby gifts) to expecting friends.  A properly planned baby shower will be greatly appreciated and forever remembered by mothers long after the birth of their child .
