Letters to Santa, by Guest Blogger Stacy McAnulty

This is me on November first: “OK, kids. Time to write your letters to Santa. Make your wish list. And remember, Santa’s watching.”

I guess my message is two-fold. Santa needs their lists earlier so he can watch the sales circulars every week for the best deals on Skylanders. And he would really like two months of good behavior.

So my three children write (or dictate) their letters with more thought and effort than they give their daily homework. Then they seal them in envelopes and address them as follows
Santa Clause
North Pole, 12345
(12345 is just such a convenient zip code.)

And after the letters are slipped into the mailbox and the flag turned toward the sky, I sneak out (it’s easier now that they are all in school) and steal the letters. I already know what’s on their wish lists. I had to help them spell ninety-percent of the words. But these letters are precious gifts. Something I hope to give back to my children when they are parents.

I remember as a kid writing letters to the jolly old elf. And I remember getting letters back from him. Sometimes they even had Rudolph’s hoof print on them, which was awesome. To my knowledge, my parents did not keep any of these letters. They went in the mailbox, and the post office delivered them (or trashed them) as they saw fit. I’d love to have those letters written by 7, 8, or 9 year old me. What gifts did I want? Did I claim to always behave? (I’m sure I did.)

In my picture book, DEAR SANTASAURUS, I get to dream up what a mischievous dinosaur would write to Santasaurus. It was so much fun to write about Ernest B. Spinosaurus’s misadventures and his ever-evolving wish list. I see parts of me in the character and parts of my children (and even parts of my dogs).

Writing letters to Santa is a fun tradition that doesn’t last long enough. Kids grow up too fast. So I’m going to treasure these letters because before I know it they will be writing e-mails (or texts or tweets) to friends and boyfriends and this precious, fun time will be gone.

I hope you enjoy every moment of your holiday, even the crazy parts, and especially the parts that will soon only be memories.

And now for the daily cookie…
