breathing and mental health

Daniel and I are playing hooky today….had to.

I pretty much had decided yesterday afternoon that I would be calling myself off. A weekend “catching babies” and stuck between three departments was not my idea of fun. L&D is implementing new computerized charting, which is right up my alley as where I came from has been charting with computers for about 9 years. It is a different program so I still have to learn it, but it is so much more simple than paper charting. That doesn’t mean it didn’t make attending deliveries of sick moms, drug addicted moms, moms in total isolation complete with gowns, gloves and masks any less stressful. But that was nothing compared to being pushed and pulled between two controlling charge nurses in the NICU and the Well Baby Nursery neither of whom seem satisfied yet were not willing to be dependable resources when it came to unfamiliar policies and procedures. Basically with them, I was damned if I do and damned if i don’t and God forbid either of them lift a finger to help me out much less relieve me for a break!

At least the L&D charge nurse fed me breakfast between deliveries. She fed me well too. I was looking for a styrofoam cup to mix my instant oatmeal when she asked why would I eat that when she had GOOD oatmeal, homemade from scratch oatmeal complete with finely chopped walnuts, pecans, raisins, currants and dates. Oh my goodness, it was so good! Even better, the rest of the NICU nurses were jealous because L&D shared food with me. Nevermind I was jealous that they actually got a real sit down and put your feet up break where they could check out the latest Target ad instead of catching up on patient charting on the first two deliveries of the day. I got some of Pam’s oatmeal, and yes, it was THAT good!

Who would have thought a little cup of oatmeal would be my one bright spot in a day at work? It was. I finally did get a break at 3:30 pm, my first in a day that began with a delivery of twins at 7 am. I didn’t get to check out the Target ad. But I did get to curl up on the broken down sofa in our breakroom and cry out of frustration.

Home at last and just when I was about ready to call off for the next day and crash and burn, I hear crying and “uhhh, uhhh, uhhh”. It’s Daniel. He is begging for some water and in between his words he was huffing trying to move air. He needs a breathing treatment, not water. No, he knows he needs water with ice, not breathing. We spent the next half hour chugging water and doing his breathing treatment. I knew for sure then I would be calling off and little man would be hanging out with mom…..so much for studying/cramming all day for PALS.

It’s all good. We slept in until 9:30 after waking the sisters for school and, after another breathing treatment, we are going to burn off some of our albuterol high by taking a walk to the grocery store and the coffee shop. It’s our breathing and mental health day!
