The pursuit of perfect. I never thought I would have the chance to read a book that would open my eyes. In the book, “The Pursuit of Perfect: How to Stop Chasing Perfection and Start Living a Richer, Happier Life,” Tal Ben-Shahar explains how many people (like myself) fail to live a full life because they limit their capacity of happiness. People do not allow themselves “to experience the full range of human emotions.” When I first read the title of this book, I was hooked on the words “How to Stop Chasing Perfection.” We all strive for perfectionism in one field of life. Tal Ben-Shahar divides this book into three sections to prove his theory that everyone strives to be perfect, somehow. First, he presents his theory and explains how to accept failure, emotions, success, and reality. Secondly, he focuses on the applications of his theory with regard to optimal education, work, and love. Lastly, he asks his reader to participate in a series of ten meditations. This book made me realize how to accept failure. I have a problem with failure, it is probably one of my biggest fears. But, I learned that everyone fails, it’s accepting the failure that can change your life around. I have learned how to use his theories in every day life, especially at home and in my relationships. Now, I am going to strive to live a richer, happier life. My favorite part about the book is when the author starts off with “My name is Tal, and I am a Perfectionist,” and the book concludes as “My name is Tal, and I am also an Optimalist.” I recommend this book to all readers, especially those who are striving for perfectionism. In reality, no one is perfect.
