Book Review: The Host by Stephanie Meyer Author of #1 Bestselling Twilight Saga

Posted Jul 12 2009 10:15pm

the host image Meyer has written this book for the adults, which I am glad for as the Twilight Saga is a very good series, but it tends to get young adultish. This one is for us adults who like the alien and even vampire themes, and it is a very good book. It is about a “soul” that takes over human bodies and minds or hosts the bodies that it takes over and the human being becomes this different person through the host. Melanie wakes up as Wanderer (her new being that has taken over)and has to resist the alien that has taken over her body. The take over from the parasitic aliens is gradual and not noticed by earth, but once they take over it is swift, and nothing could be done to stop it. Once inside a body the host has full control and the human is basically gone. Wanderer however, still has both bodies and feels for both sides, the human and hosted side. She refuses to let the host take over and fights with it to save her family and boyfriend.
The alien souls that take over are at first very unlikable, but they grow on you as the story progresses, and Wanderer starts to feel for the Hosts as much as her own humans she has always known. Torn she finds it is hard to take sides against the other. The great thing about this book was anyone can read it not just science fiction fans, or just romance fans; it really will appeal to many reading types. You feel at the end of the book that there is more to come and be said, so I hope that the author can bring this one to life as she did with Twilight. The only downside to this book was its size. It is a long book, but fairly easy read. Could it have been done just as good if it were shortened? I think so, but I wonder what parts could have been shortened without taking out major parts, so it’s a question you will have to decide for yourself. I recommend this highly, a very good book.
