On Borrowed Wings takes place during the 1940’s and focuses on its main character Adele Pietra, a sixteen year old girl who comes from a family of stone cutters. The Pietra family lives in the town of Stony Creek, Connecticut, a seashore vacation retreat for the out-of-towners who visit there each summer. The Stony Creek quarry that produces beautiful granite is also home for the local quarrymen and their families.
To help with household expenses, Adele and her mother Gertrude take in laundry for the families whose men work at these quarries. When a tragic accident occurs within the Pietra family, and takes the lives of Adele’s father and brother, she and her mother are left grief-stricken. But, the Petra women also decide to seize this opportunity to change Adele’s future after receiving a letter of acceptance to Yale University which was intended for her late brother.
Gertrude contrives a plan for Adele to take her brother’s place at this all male college determined that she study and graduate from Yale. Mind you, the year is 1940 and to impersonate a man is quite a challenge for both mother and daughter. Adele’s adventures and relationships with fellow students and professors should keep you reading until the very end. Reviewed by Jeannine
