Book Review and Giveaway: One Way Love, by Tullian Tchividjian (US/CAN) #OneWayLove

Posted Oct 15 2013 12:46pm
As Pastor Tullian Tchividjian notes in his new book, One Way Love: Inexhaustible Grace for an Exhausted World, we often feel stressed and burned out because our lives are based on performancism. “Performancism is the mindset that equates our identity and value directly to our performance and accomplishments.” We see life as a “two-way street,” full of conditions. If you do this for me, I’ll do that for you. If you love me, then I’ll love you. If you behave, you’ll get the reward. Thus, we work ourselves to death trying to get ahead, to please, to do the right thing. Unfortunately, the result is often exhaustion, not gratification.

Tchividjian explains how we can halt this rat race by understanding and accepting the grace -- what he calls “one-way love” -- offered to us by God. But if grace “has the unique power to inspire generosity, kindness, loyalty, and more love,” why do we resist it? Why do we insist on being in control, creating impossible standards? Through his own personal story of being a rebellious teenager and a righteous young husband, as well as through Bible stories and real-life examples, Tchividjian explains that by understanding how grace works, we can free ourselves from pretending to be something we’re not and become who we really are.

One Way Love is also an inspirational book for parents. Tchividjian states, “Children often move across the country to get away from a toxic home life where two-way conditionality has come to rule the roost via the judgments of parents and other siblings. A house full of conditions feels like a prison. … Yet grace has the power to bind generations together.” He gives several examples in which grace, rather than heavy-handedness, brought a rebellious child to his knees when he felt the one-way love offered by a parent. And he discusses how grace can heal a marriage and other relationships, too.

If you’re tired of trying to measure up, get things right, fix what’s broken or meet expectations, One Way Love is the antidote.
