Bedtime Math: A Book Launch, Giveaway, and Pajama Party!

Posted Jun 23 2013 2:35pm

Let’s face it: When you ask kids to list fun activities, you’re highly unlikely to hear them mention “math”! Unfortunately, math has gotten a bad rep in the past. But Laura Overdeck, a mother and trained astrophysicist, is on a mission to get people excited about math. Her national non-profit organizationwants to make nightly math problems as common as the bedtime story. And part of that effort involves the release of a new book called Bedtime Math: A Fun Excuse to Stay Up Late.

Every activity in Bedtime Math is designed to be fun! For example, the first chapter is called “Exploding Food.” (That’s sure to get kids’ attention!) One of the activities is called “Playing Ketchup.” It talks about struggling to get ketchup out of a glass bottle (something we can all relate to), which is why the plastic ketchup squirt bottle was invented. Of course, kids aren’t encouraged to squirt ketchup in bed, but they can read about it, look at the fun illustration by Jim Paillot (showing kids playing with ketchup) and then answer the accompanying math question according to their age (Wee ones, Little kids, Big kids). For instance, the “Big kids” question asks: If you squirt 2 cups of ketchup, and each cup used 14 tomatoes, how many tomatoes’ worth of ketchup did you just squirt? Kids will be giggling over the thought of squirting ketchup!

In addition to Exploding Food, other fun chapters include Wild Pets, Extreme Vehicles, Sports You Shouldn’t Try at Home, and Really Odd Jobs.

Reading a story at bedtime has become a childhood tradition. Let’s do the same for math and make problem-solving a nightly ritual, too! It’s easy to do with a copy of Bedtime Math: A Fun Excuse to Stay Up Late. I hope you’ll pick up a copy for your family! for more information.
