Aspirin and adenomas.

Posted Feb 11 2009 3:25pm

I read this article the other day and I found it a little disturbing in what they said.  Basically they are treating colon cancer with aspirin like people who have heart attacks.  I don't see how an aspirin can stop adenomas from forming considering the reason why they are showing up is because the APC gene is screwed up.  Remembering what I heard, went through and just all the other information, I'm not sold at all that an aspirin will stop adenomas from forming.  I hope that when people read about this they don't think, "Hey I'll never get colon cancer because I take this everyday."  You also have to read between the line with everything and this is no different.

There are very serious risks if the adenomas aren't taken care of, meaning the whole large intestine being removed.  I hate the fact that my kids have this disease but there is no way in H-E-double hockey sticks I'm going to just start having them pop a pill because it may stop the adenomas.  Unless there's a magic pill that we rearrange your DNA I don't think it will work.

There are many risks with this disease and the older you're diagnosed with FAP/Colon Cancer, the greater your risks are.  Luckily I am young and in shape enough that I didn't have to worry as much.  Of course there are risks with any type of surgery but none happened to me, ok there are a little thing with the arterial monitor but that took three weeks to clear up and I was fine.  Please don't take this lightly.  You have to get checked when you're supposed to (I have my yearly exam in April), change your diet (including more soy products can help prevent colon cancer), exercise.  Just treat your body good and it will try to do the same.  I treat my body better now and I feel better than I have in a long time.  I'm also hoping with the way I eat that I'm raising better, healthier eaters.  I think I am when my son asks me to put the vegetarian burrito or homemade spaghetti in his lunch instead of a ham and cheese.

Yeah my kids crave junk food and they get it once in a while.  If you don't let them eat that stuff once in a while then they will pig out on it when they are older and have more health problems.

Really if you have questions, please ask your doctor.  If your doctor tells you not to worry or doesn't take you seriously, find a new doctor.  Find someone you feel comfortable with so that way you guys are always on the same page and you can talk to him without feeling like they think you're stupid.  I was lucky and had a great experience with all my staff, I can't say everyone every time will have the same but take the time, research them and don't be afraid to get a second opinion.  So please get help if you need it because if you don't then it could be too late.
