Art of Child Maintenance: If Teens Were Like Cars

Posted Sep 03 2009 9:30am

If Teens Are Cars and Parents Are Mechanics…

  • Family Meetings = Oil Checks

Family check-in would be essential like an oil check is for a car.  Parents wouldn’t take for granted that they already know what is going on under the hood and teens would be more willing to let someone help them run better.

  • Hard Weather ahead? Get chains on your tires

Finals, prom, college admissions, someone is sick? Cars need extra support and so do teens.  It would make everyone safer if adults thought ahead to tough times and gave their teen extra support before getting stuck on a snowy road.

  • It’s good to run well, but looking good is also important.

Strong engine, full tires, well-maintained breaks are essential.  Yet, one never underappreciates the feel of comfy seats, a non chipped paint job and a dent-free bumper.  Teens must know that engine safety and health comes first, and then a nice reward is to make the outside look as good as the inside, not the other way around.

  • You Need A Spark Plug

This supplies the spark that ignites the air/fuel mixture so that combustion can happen. The spark must happen at the right moment for the engine to work.  Every teen needs their spark plug.  Adults must find the passion, hobby, person or support to make sure that teens feel ignited.

  • Be the Mechanic that Releases the Valves

The intake and exhaust valves open to let in air and fuel and to release exhaust.  Like cars, teens get bottled up.  They need their release.  Adults are teen’s ‘valves’ in the car ride home, at dinner or before bed to make sure they are resting and getting rid of what is weighing them down at the end of the day.

Most of all, we cherish our cars and our children because they usually make our life more fun, more interesting and need a lot of taking care of.
