A Fascinating Look at the Effects of Nutrition on Baby’s Development

Posted Oct 20 2009 10:00pm

Mom Central recently contacted me about an extraordinary website that employs amazing 3-D visuals to explain the principles of infant nutrition. The site is called, and as soon as you go to the site, you start seeing a video with stunning views of infant birth, the inside of the body, and more. It really emphasizes how important good nutrition is in a baby’s first year of life to ensure proper development of the eyes, brain, bones and immune system.

Did you know that half of the calories that a baby receives come from fat? Or that a baby’s birth weight can triple by the end of the first year? Babies will also grow in length by up to fifty percent. Seventy percent of babies are breastfed at birth, but 90% will also receive formula during the first year of life. That’s why it’s so important that parents know about the nutritional needs of their babies, whether the baby is breastfed, bottle-fed or both.

The website is sponsored by Mead Johnson Nutrition, the maker of Enfamil infant formula. However, I did not get the feeling that it was a plug for their products. The site is very educational and part of a larger library of 3-D visuals of the human body called The Visual MD, developed by Anatomical Travelogue, LLC.

My husband is a very visual person, and he was fascinated by the 3-D images on He found them to be so much more useful in understanding what goes on in the human body than a simple drawing or text.

If you’re an expectant or new parent, interested in nutrition or just amazed by the human body, I encourage you to visit (You can also access a webcast of the unveiling of the site at You’ll be amazed by the complexity of your baby’s little body and how much of a role you play in ensuring its proper development.

DISCLOSURE: I wrote this review while participating in a blog campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Mead Johnson. Mom Central sent me a gift card to thank me for taking the time to participate.
