It may seem like a lot of work and chaos at the same time, but when you’re a work at home mom, you get the best of both worlds. You get to be a career woman without having to forgo being at home to look after your kids and take care of their needs. Your schedule is mostly flexible which means you get to take care of chores around the house too, thus preventing them from piling up and ruining your weekends. But when you’re a work at home mom, there are certain issues that you need to be aware of, or you could end up losing control:
It’s easy to get carried away if you’re not focused: When you have the chance to do it all at once, you end up doing more of one and hardly any of the other. For example, you may either spend all day taking care of your home and the numerous tasks that keep turning up in every household and neglecting your work. Or it may be the other way round and you may end up neglecting your home and children if you’re too caught up in your work. You need to remember to stay focused on both fronts so that you balance your home and work equally well and don’t neglect one for the other.
Your children are bound to get offended at times: There will be times when you have to be firm with your kids if they distract you during your working hours. They may constantly demand your attention with requests for food, snacks or anything else. You will have to tell them in ways that they understand that you are not to be disturbed when at work unless there is an emergency. And this may not go down well with them and they may be offended. You need to be able to get them to understand that your work is important too.
You have to deal with people who think you don’t really work: When you work from home, people don’t take you seriously. They think they’re free to drop in at any time because “you’re always at home”. You need to make them understand that you do have to work, even if it is at the cost of offending them. Your real friends will know what matters and will give you the space you need.
Your weight may go up: When you stay at home most of the time, you end up snacking more often and eating even though it’s not meal time. You hardly get any exercise and you end up neglecting your looks because you don’t meet people in the line of work. So you end up becoming frumpy and overweight, and before you know it, your self-confidence takes a beating as well. So make time to exercise, and even though you work at home, get out of your nightclothes before you work and take care of your appearance.
You may ruin your social life: When you hardly go out because you’re so caught up with work and your household chores, your social life begins to suffer. So set aside time to go out, meet friends, and socialize. You’re not an island and you cannot depend on your kids alone to provide you with comfort and entertainment.
