Organic Food Tips

Getting started

Buy organic baby food

Prepared baby foods concentrate the pesticide residues in fruit and vegetables. Go organic for your baby.

Buy organic eggs

Conventional eggs are six times more likely to be contaminated with the Salmonella bacteria (a cause of diarrheal illness).

Buy organic for high pesticide fruit

These have high pesticide residues: apples, cherries, grapes, nectarines, peaches, pears, raspberries, strawberries.

Buy organic for high pesticide veggies

These veggies have the highest pesticide residues: bell peppers, celery, potatoes, spinach.

Buy organic for your kids

Focus on buying organic for your baby's and toddler's favorite foods, and especially for their milk, eggs, and meat.

Buy organic milk, eggs, and meat

Reduce your risk of being exposed to mad cow disease (BSE), and help cut back the destructive use of antibiotics.

Buy these only if money is no object

There is less benefit from organic bread, oil, pasta, cereals, and most prepackaged foods.

Consider non organic fruits

These fruits have the lowest pesticide residue: Avocados, Bananas, Mangos, Papayas, and Pineapples.

Consider non organic veggies

These veggies have the lowest pesticide residue: Asparagus, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Corn (sweet), Onions, and Peas (sweet).

Do some research

There may be more sources of organic than you thought - check your states organic associations. Look online for local organic outlets.

Ease into organic

Don't try to switch everything at once. Focus on the foods your kids eat first, and build up your use of organic foods.

Pass on organic seafood

There is no difference in pesticide or mercury levels in organic seafood.

Pesticides in apples

The average apple, even after washing, has residues from over 30 pesticides.

Skip the supermarket

Try health food stores, specialty stores, co-ops, gourmet delis, farmers' markets, and community-supported agriculture programs.

Start at the top

Purchase organic foods at the top of the food chain - dairy, egg and meats.
