Organic musts and not so musts

Posted by vicki l.

Everyone talks about eating organic, but do you really need to buy an organic lemon? In an ideal world, we'd eat all organic all the time. But that isn't always feasible. So, when you're in the market and faced with trying to figure out the organic musts, it's helpful to know that these foods tend to have higher pesticide levels than others. So try to buy organic: Apples, Bell peppers, Celery, Cherries, Grapes, Nectarines, Peaches, Pear, Potatoes, Red raspberries, Spinach and Strawberries. The following foods tend to have lower levels, so you won't have to freak about if they're organic or not: Asparagus, Avocados, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Corn (sweet), Kiwi, Mangos, Onions, Papaya, Pineapples and Sweet Peas. As for that lemon, if you're going to use the rind, I'd say go for organic.

I've read lists before about how to prioritize organic/ nonorganic foods, but I'd forgotten and your post is a nice little reminder. I grew up in a conventional apple orchard, and I remember the "sprayer" man driving through the orchards with his gas mask on. Sometimes if I was outside playing I would get sprayed on! The "sprayer man" had on this whole rubber protective suit and there I was covered in pesticides...yikes! Anyway, that was a random comment, but my point is that those apples got sprayed every week by men wearing equipment like they were government scientists experimenting with a super-virus. Those apples had to have soaked up some of those chemicals.
