So, folks, today was the first day I've really worked my new, 2nd job. (Financing those adult decisions, of course.) I'm doing telephone triage with a brand-new company in town that three of my friends founded this fall: they're all seasoned ER nurses, so they came up with the idea of starting up a telephone triage service (i.e. who you talk to when you call your doctor's office after hours) that was staffed by ER-trained and experienced RN's, the idea being that we have an extra level of expertise that keeps us from having to tell every caller "Go to the ER" to cover our asses. Theoretically, we know the questions to ask and the things to look out for, so we can offer physician clients the attractive combination of peace of mind (knowing their patients are in good virtual hands) and plain old peace (i.e. not having to bug the doctors so much during off-hours).
It was great. Nothing too fabulously emergent, only one caller out of 18 or so I told that she might want to go to urgent care or the ER later if her pain med continued to not do the job...
And the prospect of working from home, for a few bucks more an hour than I make getting pissed on and pissed off?? Yeah, where's the downside? (Other than no cute paramedics hanging around watching me work.)
