Health knowledge made personal
My name is Nina Merrill and I am a senior at Colgate University in Hamilton, NY. I started interning with the Communications Department at the Organic Trade Assocition (OTA) last summer, an experience so rewarding that I have continued though I am back at school full time.
In an effort to create a space for college students to discuss the huge national movement on university campuses to "go organic", I created the OTA sponsored blog, Organic on the Green (www.organiconthegreen.wordpress.com). I had noticed that there was an absence of discussion about the college organic effort online, so this blog was created to encourage students to share the successes and pitfalls of their organic campus initiatives. I hoped that with this new space, designated to address the unique concerns of college-aged organic proponents, other students would be empowered to take the necessary steps to improve the quality of their campus dining.
Organic on the Green has since attracted over fifty different student and professional bloggers who have written about a wide array of subjects including student sponsored CSAs and Farmers' Markets, Organic Certification in Dining Halls, and how to become a food activist after college.
I have also compiled the information gained from the blog and through additional research in an Organic Institute sponsored guide entitled "Taste the Change: How to Go Organic on Campus." This publication can be downloaded by going to www.theorganicinstitute.org.
