Support Eliminating the Medicare 24-Month Disability Waiting Period
Senator Jeff Bingaman (NM) and Congressman Gene Green (TX) recently re-introduced the Ending the Medicare Disability Waiting Act (H.R. 1708/S. 700). This bill would completely phase out the Medicare 24-month disability waiting period over ten years, whileimmediately eliminating the waiting period for people with life-threatening conditions.

to take action now and urge your Members of Congress to support this important bill.

Congress must place a high priority on ending this unjustifiable delay in coverage for Americans who are most in need of access to healthcare. Currently, Medicare forces many individuals - who live with a disability so severe that they cannot work - to wait two years before they can receive any healthcare coverage through Medicare. An estimated 1.8 million Americans living with disabilities - from multiple sclerosis to cancer - are stuck in this waiting period.

Medicare provides an invaluable safety net for Americans living with chronic diseases and disabilities by providing health insurance when other avenues are not available. It is common during these 24 months for many individuals to forgo necessary medical treatments, stop taking their medications as prescribed, and eliminate important therapies that help maintain function and independence.

Take action now by contacting your Members of Congress and ask them to co-sponsor H.R. 1708/S. 700!
