When moods dramatically shift, it is important to contact your doctor immediately. A med adjustment may be in order. If not, increased session with your therapist will help you to learn the skills necessary to weather these storms in the most healthful, least detrimental way.

The long-term answer to this question is education and skill development. Many people with bipolar disorder work closely with a therapist or counselor, learning to identify early signs and symptoms of an impending episode and to adjust their activities and medications (with the help of their treating psychiatrist) to avoid a more serious situation.

Skill development and self-awareness differ with each individual, as well as the rapidity of cycling and seriousness. It takes commitment to wellness, consistent effort to adapt one's own behaviors and strong relationships with your treatment team, family, friends. Having trusted individuals around who can offer a welcomed heads up when things seem to be going awry is vital.
