You’re Not in Kansas Anymore, Dorothy!

Posted Jun 14 2008 8:00am

When we travel, my husband and I very often rent an apartment or a condo rather than get reservations in a hotel.  We have found some great deals from a company called “Vacation Rentals By Owners” at www.vrbo.com.  The price is usually comparable to that of a hotel and it gives us more options like more room, gallons of coffee in the morning, the choice to cook or eat out in exchange for maid service and room service.

This weekend we’re in Chicago.  The condo we rented is in the perfect location on the corner of Larabee and Armitage which is only about 250 feet down the street from our kids’ apartment.  We keep focusing on the “perfect location” part so we don’t become discouraged by the “across the corner from a fire station” part or the “heavy footed elephant who lives over the condo and plays country music at 1:00 a.m.” part or the “oh my gawd!  We’re not on the farm anymore” part or the “the internet connection sucks” part.

Sitting on the small brick patio feels like prison to us.  All we can see is the grey cedar fencing that contains the small 8’x12’ patio.  Look what living on 80 acres with beautiful 360º views has done to us!  There are probably residents in Chicago that would give their right arm for this patio!

Then there’s the noise.  Just the sound of traffic alone is enough to keep us awake at night.  Add the occasional siren from the fire station across the street and the sound of pounding feet overhead and there was very little sleeping last night.  We both have that “hangover” feeling from not sleeping well.
