Who Do You Love Most?

Posted by Lauren W. Healthy Living Professional

If your answer to the question posted in the title wasn’t automatically “myself of course!”, perhaps you should reexamine the relationship you have with yourself.

Give yourself -first and foremost- the love that you need. The only person you can count on is yourself.

Last Saturday I realized that I never pamper myself and that - gee… it’s fun! I’m staying with a friend in her lovely apartment in the City for the summer and last Saturday happened to be FREE SPA DAY. Talk about getting lucky! I got a manicure, pedicure, facial, massage, and cocktails all for free! These aren’t the kinds of things I spend money on - especially not on myself.

Sure, as a dancer I go to the masseuse here and there. However, I go for necessity. (As in: “Crap, I’m in horrible pain and can’t move very well. I think I should go get a deep tissue massage and grit my teeth through an hour of deep kneading.) I never get my nails done or just go to the Spa to pamper myself. I’ve never been to a spa in my life. Honestly, I thought spas were for people who had extra time and money on their hands with nothing better to do.

But then I discovered the benefits of pampering myself : )

Pampering yourself is about setting time asidefor your own personal relaxation- whatever that may mean to you. In what way do you nurture others? How do you want to be treated by your friends and significant other? What do you want but won’t buy yourself? Don’t wait around for someone else to treat you. Treat yourself, and treat yourself before you treat anyone else.

“Put your oxygen mask on first and then assist those around you.” Give to yourself first. Give to yourself and you’ll be better suited to give to others (if you want to).

A little selfishness and over-indulgence never hurt anyone. :) Pampering is an essential part of my work and my lifestyle, so I'm lucky in that sense, but I'm always baffled at the sheer number of people who generally don't even think to do anything nice for themselves...Treating ourselves the way we'd like others to treat us (i.e., if we want romance, let's give ourselves a little romance), to me, is instrumental to being happy.
