I’m doing research to expand and add value to my stress management program. As a result, I’m surrounded by books. One of which is the well-known First Things First by Stephen Covey . I didn’t even get past the first line of the introduction before this blog post came to me, especially given all the talk this week about New Year’s resolutions.
The first sentence of the introduction reads:
If you were to pause and think seriously about the “first things” in your life – three or four things that matter most – what would they be?
Are these things receiving the care, emphasis, and time you really want to give them?
This is exactly how I think about my goals and plans. In fact, I recently presented this idea to a small group of woman during a talk on goal setting for 2011. I base my goals/plans on two things: my values and my priorities.
My values: Fun, feel good, guide, experience
Maintaining good health
Keeping strong family ties and community relationships
Making a living doing work I enjoy and that positively impacts the health and well-being of others.
If my actions during the day fit with my values and priorities I feel good at the end of the day. If they don’t, it’s time to re-assess.
