Growing up in a suburb outside of Syracuse, NY, I figured the latest trend of walking would be pointless there. I was proven wrong. Even though Syracuse is a car city,Walkscore.comproved to be helpful. It turned out that a restaurant is walking distance from my neighborhood street; it was less than a half mile away. The closest drug store from my neighborhood was less than a mile away. A cup of coffee was just a little over a mile away.
No matter what city you are in, Walkscore.com can navigate through the largest and smallest of cities, and proves there isn’t much pain in walking the distance to get a cup of coffee after-all.
All you do is plug in an address and the website breaks down for you how far the closest dining locations, movie theaters, schools, bookstores, bars, coffee shops, drug stores, parks, fitness clubs, even hardware stores, are from where your office, home, or wherever you might be is located. At the top of the website your address will be given awalk-scorebased out of 1-100.
The top walkable cities are: San Francisco, New York, Boston and Chicago.
Miami and Dallas are not at the top but both of their walk-ratings are very high, and even in the least expected walkable cities there are walkable places.
Sure, my hometown neighborhood is mainly car-dependent but it feels good to know that more than just a Taco Bell and Post Office is around the corner, and within walking distance.
Walkingalso relieves stress and is a great way to lose a few pounds. Walking will help you get into a fitness routine during your day without much effort at all. Walking also buffs up your brain and makes you more alert and able tofocus.
So the next time you are hungry or need a brain boost give yourself a Walkscore test at Walkscore.com. You might learn a thing or two about your neighborhood, or discover a city that you didn’t expect is actually walkable.
