Stress Relief Tip: Acknowledge Your Stress

Posted Dec 16 2010 12:45pm

During the day do you ever find yourself feeling irritated?  Tense?  Frustrated?

What do you do about it?  Do you let it continue or do you acknowledge it?

I woke up one recent morning to work on a volunteer project before starting my work day.  As time went by I became increasingly frustrated with the technology issues I faced.  I could feel the frustration build. I started yelling at the printer and at no one/nothing in particular.  My husband peaked his head in and asked, “Who are you yelling at?”

In that moment I paused and chuckled.  “I’m frustrated!” I shouted.

In that moment of acknowledgement I realized what my frustration was all about.  It had little to do with the technology and everything to do with my personal needs not yet being met.  I hadn’t exercised, eaten breakfast or showered, and time was running short.

I put the volunteer project aside to ensure I enjoyed a short workout (Because I believe some is always better than none!), showered and ate breakfast.

Guess what?  I still had time left over for the volunteer project and was able to finish that, too.

Sometimes we think we have to plow through a situation even when we hit a wall.  Instead of letting the frustration build, notice it and acknowledge it.  That moment of acknowledgment allows you to take a short break from it to take care of yourself or another project, and then come back. You may even find that you’re more productive than if you stick with it from the get go, banging your head against a wall that isn’t going anywhere.

What do you think?  Are you good at acknowledging your stress or do you allow it to build?
