NEW! Now available: PRIVATE GYROKINESIS® sessions with Marya Michaels. (semi-privates also available) at Movements Afoot
Perfect if you want to learn about GYROKINESIS® in more depth, or work on a specific issue with a more hands-on approach. Marya can create a personalized session that will target your special needs.
In GYROKINESIS®, we move the body in all three dimensions, using fluid circles, figure eights and snake-like waves. We focus on starting all movement from the “seed center” (lower abs, pelvis).
GYROKINESIS® was founded by Juliu Horvath, fusing principles of yoga, dance, tai chi, and swimming. Like a dance class, flow and breath are essential, but unlike a yoga class, positions are not held for long periods of time.
• Promotes strong, lean muscles
• Increases flexibility, coordination, and balance
• Enhances joint mobility and articulation
• Frees the body of pain and restrictions
• Increases circulation of blood, lymphatic fluids, and energy
• Strengthens the nervous system
• Provides a portable workout that can be easily performed while at home, office, or traveling
Class traditionally begins seated on a stool or chair. The 90 minute format starts with a self-massage sequence or “Awakening of the Senses” which will energize and enliven you from the top of your head to the tips of your toes. In the seated position, the class moves through a series of fluid movements that mobilize the spine. These movements include arching, curling, bending, twisting and spiraling. The same patterns are expanded upon as the class leaves the stools and proceeds to floor work and standing work. Focus is on a variety of joint and muscle groups including hips, knees, hamstrings and abdominals. Coordinated breathing patterns stimulate the nervous system, open energy pathways and oxygenate the blood.
