This year? I'm going to get serious about gardening. I have talked for years and years about having my own garden; this is the year I am going to do it.
Well, for starters because the vegetables and fruits that my family consumes constantly cost a pretty penny at the store. The cost of buying one tomato (!) is the same as buying the whole plant, and hey- with the plant, I'll get more than one tomato! We eat a very italian based diet, and I don't use anything store bought, I make everything from scratch. My garden staples will be tomatoes, onions, green peppers and who knows what else...
I've been considering raised beds, and have been reading about how to build raised beds. I don't know that this will be my choice, but it is certainly interesting. Any suggestions?
My other reasons for wanting a garden are this:
Its very powerful to grow something yourself. The pride in nurturing and caring for something and watching it bloom and bear fruit is quite an experience. I would like that not only for myself, but to show my son the beauty of gardening. Knowing his personality, I have a feeling he will get into it. A garden can be a wonderful lesson place for a child (and his mother!) In addition to the benefits of teaching us about gardening and saving some money, I also can't forget about the nutritional aspect of home grown fruits and veggies. To get ripe on the vine in the hot Texas sun instead of on the shelves of the local market? Awesome.
Can you tell I'm looking forward to spring? It can't come soon enough!
